Matthew Theobald has been announced as the Crewe and Nantwich Liberal Democrats candidate for the 2024 General Election, following one of the party's regular "Politics in a Pub" events.

Mr Theobald has lived near Nantwich for half his life, during which time he has served as a governor at a local high school and as chair of his local council.

He has witnessed first-hand the damaging effects of underfunding in the health service. GP's, hospitals, pharmacies, and dentists are all under strain and this has knock on effects for all Crewe and Nantwich residents.

Matthew Theobald is concerned by the lack of major investment in the Crewe area, with the loss of HS2 and how funding has been diverted elsewhere (Liberal Democrats).

At the "Politics in a Pub" event, Matthew said: "It is pleasing to see such strong local support and that it was important to remind people this constituency is not just about the Conservative and Labour party.

"The Liberal Democrats have much to offer locally on many issues.

"Recent shocking pollution incidents in our River Weaver have harmed both the river and wildlife, the polluters must be held to account.

"We must tackle the unnecessary building of five-to-six-bedroom houses in Crewe and Nantwich which get built on flood plains and our green spaces. These houses ignore what our communities old and young need."

Mr Theobald, who never planned to get involved in politics, says he could not sit by and watch this "great country, and local communities get torn apart by divisive politics, under funding, and lack of empathy."

The Crewe and Nantwich parliamentary candidate says he is keenly aware the cost-of-living crisis has had a "horrendous effect" on the country, with the main worry for many being: "how can I afford next month's rent or mortgage."

Matthew Theobald labelled recent pollution incidents in the River Weaver as 'shocking' (Ryan Parker).

Mr Theobald says he also recognises the tough challenges faced by small businesses.

He said: "For over 17 years, I ran company helping to develop pharmaceuticals such as insulin injectors, asthma inhalers and injections for debilitating diseases, all helping improve people's quality of life.

"I understand how difficult it is for small businesses and workers to make ends meet right now.

Mr Theobald is also concerned by the lack of major investment in the Crewe area with the loss of HS2 and how funding has been diverted elsewhere.

He added: "Crewe used to be a wonderful town to shop in, but now has been neglected for over two decades.

Matthew Theobald has served as a governor at a local high school and as chair of his local council (Liberal Democrats).

"It is time someone actually fights for the people of Crewe."

Matthew Theobald joins Ben Fletcher (Conservative), Brian Silver (Putting Crewe & Nantwich First), Connor Naismith (Labour), Matt Wood (Reform UK) and, Phil Lane (Workers Party) and Te Ata Brown (Green Party)in standing for the 2024 General Election in Crewe and Nantwich.
