A horse was rescued by firefighters after becoming trapped five feet down in a ditch near Nantwich.

On Tuesday 3 November, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to Audlem Road, Hatherton.

At 10.46am, a mare had become trapped approximately five feet deep in a ditch, requiring a specialist animal rescue operation.

This incident brought three fire engines from Congleton, Audlem and Knutsford, with rapid response rescue units from Congleton and Audlem attending, alongside an animal rescue unit from Bollington.

A vet sedated the female horse before specialist animal rescue, technical rescue and large animal rescue teams worked together to free her.

Farm machinery was used to carefully lift the mare out of the ditch.

The horse is expected to make a full recovery.
