Cheshire East has taken a decisive step to protect residents and visitors from falling victim to fraud, banning the use of QR codes as a method of payment in its car parks.
The council has warned motorists to stay safe from QR code scams by using their cashless parking app provider RingGo.
Cheshire East have been informed of incidents of QR codes being sent via text message or email, urging people to scan them. Once scanned these codes lead to fraudulent websites.
To prevent any problems, Cheshire East is advising people to download the official app from the App Store or Google Play only.
A Cheshire East spokesperson said: "Do not respond to any text about a parking ticket. We will never send you a text message to request payment for a parking ticket.
"Our Civil Enforcement Officers issue penalty charge notices on the spot, or you may receive a penalty charge notice by post.
"The text says a penalty charge notice was issued by a local council and provides a link for online payment. It asks for immediate payment and threatens prosecution if the fine is not paid.
"If you receive a scam text or WhatsApp delete the message, don't click on any payment link don't give any personal information, you can report it by visiting the Action Fraud website or by ringing 0300 123 2040."
Separately, there have also been recent incidents in neighbouring councils of fake QR code stickers being left on pay and display machines, which take people to a fraudulent website.
