Worm Charming World Championships return to Willaston
By Jonathan White 1st Jun 2026
The annual Worm Charming Annual Championships will take place in Willaston on Saturday 13 June.
The event is one of the UK's unusual and endearing competitions which attracts participants and media from around the world.
The event is held at Willaston Primary Academy, Derwent Close, with gates opening at 1pm and the worm charming taking place from 2pm to 2:30pm.
The competition invites participants to use a variety of innovative and often eccentric techniques to charm worms to the surface of their 3×3 metre plot – all within a 30-minute window.
From "twanging" garden forks to musical serenades and stomping feet, competitors will do whatever it takes to lure the most worms.

The current world record stands at an impressive 567 worms, set in 2009.
Plot bookings are now open, with two entry types available, via the website.
This includes a Traditional Plot (£10) – for teams of up to four, with members remaining the same throughout the charming period.
There is also a Team Plot (£15) – allowing larger groups to take turns, provided no more than four are on the plot at any one time.
All participants must bring their own charming equipment and ensure any sharp tools such as garden forks are covered before and after the event for safety.
The championships are part of a family fun day, featuring a bar, hot food, sweet treats, ice cream, face painting, business and charity stalls and a prize raffle.
Proceeds will go towards supporting Willaston Primary Academy. For more information and updates, visit HERE.
