Organisers of Nantwich's annual Battle of Nantwich 'Holly Holy Day' English Civil War re-enactment are calling on local people to get involved and help bring history to life at the 2027 event on Saturday 23 January.

The spectacular historic event, organised with the support of the Sealed Knot, is a highlight of Nantwich's winter calendar, commemorating the town's famous victory in 1644 when Parliamentarian troops under Sir Thomas Fairfax lifted the Royalist siege.

For more than 50 years, the Sealed Knot has recreated this dramatic chapter in Nantwich's history, inspired by the townspeople who celebrated the victory by wearing sprigs of holly in their hats, a tradition that lives on through today's 'Holly Holy Day'.

The event attracts hundreds of visitors to the town, and organisers are now looking for enthusiastic, friendly volunteers to help make the 2027 celebrations another memorable success.

Chairperson of the Holly Holy Day committee, Jo Lowry, said: "Holly Holy Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Nantwich's remarkable history and bring our community together.

"Our volunteers make a huge difference to the success of the event, and we would love more local people to join the team.

"Whether you can spare a few hours or the whole day, you'll be helping to create a wonderful experience for visitors while being part of something truly special."

Volunteers play a vital role in welcoming visitors, handing out programmes, providing directions, keeping public areas tidy and helping the day run smoothly.

Most volunteers are based either in the town centre or on Mill Island, with a small number helping with traffic management on Welsh Row.

In the town centre, tasks include assisting at the information stall, directing visitors to local landmarks such as the museum and church, distributing programmes and helping keep the streets litter-free.

On Mill Island, volunteers help manage gates and wristbands, assist with crowd control, distribute programmes and ensure spectators remain safe as the Sealed Knot's troops march across the bridge.

There will be plenty to enjoy throughout the day, including the thrilling battle re-enactment featuring cannon fire, musket volleys and swordplay, alongside historical displays, food stalls and family-friendly entertainment across the town.

Anyone who would like to volunteer and help bring this unique piece of Nantwich's history to life is encouraged to get in touch at [email protected].
