Thousands of fish dead in 'severe' Nantwich pollution incident

Thousands of fish have died in Nantwich's River Weaver following another "severe' pollution incident, a fifth in just three years.
On the morning of Friday 22 August, The Environment Agency sent staff to the River Weaver after reports of a signifcant number of dead fishclose to Mill Street bridge.
This pollution incident is believed to have been caused by a large discharge of farm slurry, leading to a foamy water surface, completely depriving the water of oxygen.

Treasurer of Nantwich Angling Society, Stuart Mitton, told Nub News: "Nantwich Angling Society has been alerted to yet another severe pollution incident on the River Weaver in Nantwich, marking the fifth such incident in three years.
"Preliminary investigations suggest that the pollution is caused by a significant discharge of farm slurry, similar to the major incidents that occurred two years ago.
"The Environment Agency and local authorities, supported by Connor Naismith and Nantwich Town Council, are currently investigating the incident.
"I am deeply disturbed by this incident, particularly given our efforts to restock the river following the previous devastating fish kill.
"I urge anyone with information that may help the investigation to get in touch with myself or the Environment Agency."
This agricultural pollution incident comes two years after slurry was dumped in the River Weaver higher up the watercourse.
The Environment Agency re-stocked the River Weaver this February, releasing thousands of new fish to replace those lost in 2023.

The Environment Agency said: "Our fisheries officers have been responding to reports of dead fish and fish in distress at multiple sites today, including on the River Weaver in Nantwich.
"To help protect the fish, the team has deployed chemical aeration at the site. This will increase oxygen levels in the water and provide immediate relief for fish in the affected stretch of river.
"We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary. Thank you to members of the public who reported the incident.
"For your safety, please keep out of the water at this time. This includes pets as well. Thank you for your cooperation."
The Environment Agency launched an investigation after two serious pollution incidents in the River Weaver in autumn 2023, but this did not lead to any prosecutions.
Crewe and Nantwich MP, Connor Naismith, said: "I am appalled and deeply saddened by yet another pollution incident in the Reaver Weaver, which has left thousands of fish dead.
"This is the fifth such disaster in three years, and it is utterly unacceptable.

"Our river is a precious part of Nantwich's heritage and environment. I have written to the Environment Agency demanding a full and urgent investigation.
"I will be pressing for those responsible to be held to account. This cannot be allowed to happen again. Our community deserves answers and action.
"If you see signs of pollution or fish in distress, please report it immediately to the Environment Agency's 24-hour hotline on 0800 80 70 60."
