Independent Italian Nantwich coffee shop and restaurant, Enzo, has spoken out as Starbucks opens opposite on the town's High Street.

The global chain, 35 High Street, launched at 7am on Friday 13 February, prompting concern among some local traders about the impact on small, independent businesses.

In a heartfelt message shared with customers, Enzo Nantwich owner, Kate Mullarkey, said: "When a big chain opens across the road, with the added privilege of not paying any tax, it's scary for us small independents.

"But then I remind myself what makes a coffee shop special. It's when they know your name when you walk through the door.

"They know your order before you have to say it. They hold your wriggling baby so you can eat and enjoy your coffee while it's hot.

"We celebrate birthdays and other milestones with you, and sit with you and listen if things aren't going your way. Friendships are formed."

Open since 2010, the Nantwich Italian cafe said that while independents cannot compete with the marketing power of multinational chains, they offer something different.

The 44 High Street business also urged residents to continue supporting local favourites across the town.

Enzo said: "We don't have million pound marketing budgets (because we aren't lucky enough to escape the tax man) but we have heart, and community and people that make our coffee shops places people want to be.

"So whether it's Enzo, or Edwards Deli and Wine, Toast Haus Nantwich, Nantwich Bookshop and Coffee Lounge, Doug's Deli and Sandwiches, Moss the Cafe whatever your go-to independent is, support them now more than ever."

Many Nantwich customers have already responded with messages of encouragement, highlighting the strong sense of community the town's independent cafés have built over the years.

Enzo Nantwich is open 8am to 5pm (Monday to Saturday) and 9am to 4pm (Sunday).

Will be interesting to compare the almost nothing in corporation tax that Enzo Commercial Solutions limited paid, versus the owners of the new Starbucks who paid close to £1m in corporation tax. She should probably get her facts straight before slandering a franchisee in the media.
