How you can build a career in care: Sarah’s journey at Nantwich company

Nantwich-based care company, SureCare, is proving the care sector offers real career progression, for those who are passionate about helping others.
Sarah Castelow, started as a carer at SureCare Central Cheshire in October 2020 at the age of 21, unsure of which career path to take but knowing she wanted to make a difference.
Just four years later, the 25-year-old has worked her way up to care manager, a role she never initially imagined for herself.
Established in February 2019 by directors Tina Jones and Kirstie Hercules, SureCare has a focus on Nantwich and South Cheshire areas such as Audlem and Willaston.

Sarah told Nub News: "I have always wanted to do something that helps people and makes a difference, but didn't know exactly what sector to go into.
"Once I left school, I ended up working at a call centre. After about a year I realised this wasn't what I wanted to do.
"My mum went into care with SureCare and told me it would be something I would enjoy and she was right.
"When looking at the reviews here, you could see they really cared about their clients. This encouraged me to come here and I have never looked back.
"I started off as a carer and within a year I got up to a care senior, learning more about how assessments work and how care is delivered.
"I then worked my way up to become a team leader, splitting my time 50/50 between working on rota in the office.
"Tina and Kirstie always had the confidence in me that I could become a care manager which I moved up to last summer.
"I enjoyed the hands-on experience so much I didn't want to lose that and was initially hesitant.

"As soon as I realised I was still able to help people so much I was happy for this promotion."
Now, as care manager, Sarah is responsible for recruiting new clients, introducing them to SureCare and creating support plans.
She also ensures staff are trained and that clients' changing needs are met.
Sarah said: "A clients routine is always changing so it is important staff are trained with them and ensure the correct support is in place.
"There is so much to know about the care industry. I do think carers get overlooked quote a bit. You really have to have a little bit of knowledge on everything.
"You need knowledge on medications, whether people are improving or declining and there is always more to learn.
"We always want more and more people to become carers and help the industry, but it has to be a job you are fully committed to.
"If you aren't sure what industry you want to get into, but know you want to help people, as a carer with SureCare you can see the range of professions available.

"Here, we always make sure staff are supported from top to bottom, if I wasn't supported so much by Tina and Kerstie, I wouldn't be able to support the management team which would have a knock on affect of carers and clients.
"It is such an important and rewarding job, being able to go out there and enable people to staying in their own homes and go out in the local community.
"The feedback we get of putting a smile on clients faces makes us all feel proud of our team and the job."
Sarah believes SureCare's supportive culture makes it a "special" place to work.
The care manager said: "I have always wanted to increase my knowledge in this industry, I do miss being a carer in the aspect of being out there building connections with clients.
"Often, I put myself on rota during weekends and evenings just so I can still go out there. It is important we all still go out on rota to know where everyone is up to.
"At SureCare, we are one big strong unit, we all muck in when needed. It is a special company to work for."
What next for Sarah at SureCare?
Sarah added: "The next step for me would be to become a registered manager when the time is right.
"I have always wanted to make sure I have all the knowledge to fulfil a role and be fully ready for when the opportunity arises.
"This may take months or years but I will be ready one day and SureCare is the best place to further my career in this industry."
