Nantwich walking footballers enjoy 'keenly contested' Spanish adventure
By Jonathan White 19th Oct 2026
Nantwich Barony Walking Football team enjoyed a memorable international adventure on the Costa Blanca in October after taking their skills overseas for the first time to face Spanish opposition.
The Nantwich squad, made up of members of Everybody Health & Leisure, took on Los Marineros Walking Football at Campo de Fútbol Pereira in Santa Pola, Alicante, in an entertaining friendly played under UEFA walking football rules.
Despite a spirited performance, Nantwich narrowly lost 4-3, with Paul Brookes scoring all three goals to claim a superb hat-trick and earn the visitors' Man of the Match accolade.
The fixture marked a major milestone for the growing Nantwich-based club, bringing players together for a special sporting experience while offering an insight into how walking football is played in Spain.
With 11 players representing each side, the closely fought contest was officiated by a Spanish league referee, with both teams adapting to the stricter application of the rules on running.
Los Marineros opened the scoring from the penalty spot following accumulated running offences, but Nantwich responded in style as Brookes fired home a fine long-range effort to level the scores.
A further penalty for running gave Nantwich the opportunity to take a 2-1 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The Spanish side fought back in the second period, with Mike Lee converting a penalty after Los Marineros were awarded a spot-kick for a foul in the area.
Nantwich goalkeeper Rob then produced an excellent low save to deny Roberto from the penalty spot, keeping the visitors in the contest.
However, Los Marineros regained the advantage when Gavin converted another penalty after a Nantwich player entered the three-metre zone.
The hosts extended their lead to 4-2 with the goal of the game, finishing off a flowing passing move involving several players before Gavin curled a superb effort into the far corner.
Nantwich refused to give up and finished strongly, with Brookes completing his hat-trick with a powerful drive past Los Marineros goalkeeper Keith, nicknamed "The Cat".
The late goal set up a tense finish, but the Spanish side held on to secure a 4-3 victory.
Paul Brookes was named Nantwich Barony's Man of the Match in recognition of his three goals and tireless contribution, while the visitors could take plenty of positives from an impressive all-round team performance.
Off the pitch, team manager, Andrew Hendrie, was also recognised for his outstanding contribution.
The non-playing manager, who helped organise NantwichBarony Walking Football and was described as the "glue that keeps us all together", received a Golden Boot award for his efforts.
The squad also unanimously voted Andrew Hendrie Man of the Tour in recognition of his organisational skills, leadership and work in bringing the trip together.
The Spanish adventure began with the team arriving on Saturday evening before watching Santa Pola CF take on U.D. Rayo Ibense on Sunday, giving the players an opportunity to experience football in the region and observe differences in playing styles beyond La Liga.
The international friendly was organised by Colin Turner, who owns an apartment on the Costa Blanca and helped arrange the fixtures.
Reflecting on the occasion, Colin thanked the Spanish hosts for helping make the match possible.
He said: "A big thank you to everyone who turned up from Los Marineros who made this International Friendly possible and a celebratory three cheers was given to them. Every player played their part in a keenly contested game.
"And, as tradition demands in Spain, everyone headed back to Bar Tango for some well-earned tapas a quiz and beer.
"Well played Los Marineros. See you in 2027."
Plans are already under way for a return visit in May 2027, when Nantwich Barony hopes to compete in a multi-team tournament featuring a side from Blackpool. A further trip is also being arranged for October 2027.
