New Crewe and Nantwich wards confirmed in Cheshire East boundary changes
Changes will be made to wards in Crewe and Nantwich, as part of the Local Government Boundary Commission for England's final recommendations for Cheshire East.
The new boundaries, confirmed this week, aim to deliver fairer representation and will take effect at the May 2027 local elections.
Crewe Maw Green was added in attempt to improve electoral equality in the town.
A minor adjustment to its boundary with Crewe East was included in the final plans, moving the line to the rear of properties on Remer Street.
This change reduced the projected electoral variance for the new ward from minus 10 per cent to minus 6 per cent.
Crewe East
Crewe East saw only the minor change linked to the creation of Maw Green.
Suggestions to maintain current boundaries or shift the line to follow Sydney Road were not accepted.
A broader proposal to create a new "Crewe Grand Junction" ward was rejected due to high variance and limited supporting evidence.
Wistaston & Willaston
On the edge of Crewe, a newly proposed ward will be officially named 'Wistaston & Willaston' after a boundary review concluded it best reflects the communities it covers.
The name was adopted despite opposition from the Liberal Democrats, who had suggested transferring part of Willaston parish into the Shavington ward.
This proposal was rejected, as it would divide the parish and result in an unacceptably high 19 per cent electoral variance.
Concerns were also raised by residents over potential loss of Willaston's identity and calls to retain the existing Willaston & Rope ward.
However, these suggestions were declined due to projected electoral imbalances.
Crewe North, Crewe East, Crewe St Barnabas, Crewe South, Crewe West and Leighton
Across the rest of Crewe, most ward boundaries remain unchanged.
Crewe North will retain its existing name, despite a request to rename it "Crewe Coppenhall." It will also eat up the Crewe Central ward.
The Commission felt there was not enough justification to support the name change.
Crewe St Barnabas also remains the same, with its current boundaries and name receiving clear support from local residents and councillors.
No changes were made to Crewe South or Crewe West, with no further submissions received during consultation for either area.
In Leighton, no further changes were made, with no further submissions received during consultation.
Nantwich
The final recommendations for ward boundaries in Nantwich have been confirmed, with no changes to the earlier proposals.
The Liberal Democrats supported the draft plans for the Nantwich North & West and Nantwich South & Stapeley wards, with no additional submissions or objections received during the consultation period.
As a result, the Boundary Commission upheld its original proposals, finalising the division of Nantwich into these two wards.
The Commission has suggested unresolved parish boundary issues, including those near Stephenson Drive, could be addressed through a future Community Governance Review led by Cheshire East Council.
Weston and Wybunbury
A new two-councillor ward named Weston & Wybunbury has been recommended following objections to earlier proposals that placed Wychwood Village in a separate Weston ward.
The Boundary Commission says this merger ensures the entire Wychwood development is contained within a single ward, along with Crewe Green.
Leighton, Minshull Vernon & Woolstanwood Parish Council, the Wychwood Community Development Group, and 14 residents argued Wychwood Village and Wychwood Park form a single community and should remain together in Wybunbury ward.
What happens now?
The changes will become law once Parliament has approved them.
Staff at the council will then ensure the arrangements are in place for the 2027 elections.
