Former Nantwich Town FC defender, Courtney Meppen-Walters, has died at the age of 32.

Nantwich Town said everyone at the club was "devastated" to learn of the former Dabbers centre-back's passing.

Meppen-Walters initially joined Nantwich on loan from Guiseley in December 2023.

His immediate impact on the defence and the team's results saw him make the move permanent just weeks later.

He made 33 appearances for the Dabbers, scoring three goals, including a memorable low free-kick against Stalybridge.

Meppen-Walters left Nantwich in December 2024 to join Bury.

The defender quickly became a fan favourite during his time at the club, with Nantwich praising his aerial and physical presence on the pitch and his "infectious and positive personality" away from it.

He was also described as a central figure in the Nantwich dressing room.

Nantwich chairman Jon Gold said: "Courtney was a larger than life character with the biggest heart and he quickly became loved by both the Dabbers faithful and his fellow players, who all looked up to his inspirational leadership.

"He left a lasting impression on everyone that was fortunate enough to meet him and whilst there were sadly some dark times in his life, something that he never shied away from, the Courtney we knew was full of positivity and inspiration and our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and all that knew him at such an incredibly sad time."

Paul Carden, the manager who brought Meppen-Walters to Nantwich, said he was "absolutely devastated".

He said: "He was a real presence on and off the pitch; when he came to us on loan, he really pulled the squad together.

"He was such a personality and such a warm person with that. I think every club manager and team-mate of his would say the same thing about him, about how infectious his personality was and how he'd brighten up a room every time he walked into it and put smiles on people's faces.

"That's why the news is so sad and tragic. My heart goes out to his family."

Jon Moran, who played alongside and managed Meppen-Walters at Nantwich, said he was "heartbroken" by the news.

He described Meppen-Walters as "an incredible person" and "a great friend to so many".

He added: "Meps was someone who will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.

"My thoughts, love and deepest condolences are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

"Rest in peace, Meps."

Nantwich Town ended its tribute by sending its condolences to Meppen-Walters' family and friends, adding: "Once a Dabber, always a Dabber."
