The Environment Agency has identified the source of River Weaver pollution in Nantwich on Friday 22 August (Hilary Wymer Serif).

Following a wave of dead fish in Nantwich's River Weave5, Connor Naismith MP has been given an update from the Environment Agency on those responsible for the pollution.

Mr Naismith had requested to be kept updated on the enforcement proceedings against the polluters and had written to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) following a further request for information from a concerned constituent.

The Nantwich MP has since received a detailed response from DEFRA which confirmed the principal source of the pollution had been identified, and a full investigation is underway.

Unfortunately, specific details cannot be currently provided for legal reasons.

Connor Naismith MP has received a detailed response from DEFRA which confirmed the principal source of the pollution had been identified, and a full investigation is underway (Connor Naismith MP).

Emma Hardy MP, representing DEFRA, said that "the EA will take robust and appropriate enforcement action against any polluters found to be responsible."

Mr Naismith said: "Firstly, I want to thank the Environment Agency and DEFRA for the speed at which they have dealt with residents' concerns.

"We have to remember that this is not an isolated event. In October last year, I spoke in Parliament about the urgent need for addressing agricultural slurry dumping.

"There were at least two similar incidents in 2023 resulting in significant fish mortality in Nantwich.

"Understandably, people want to see the polluters held to account and the necessary deterrents in place to stop this happening again.

Connor Naismith MP says he intends to continue monitoring this case until those responsible are prosecuted at 'the highest possible level' (Nick Wadey).

"The Environment Agency are increasing the number of inspections taking place to ensure agricultural practices are compliant with regulations.

"For many people in Nantwich dealing with the scourges of dead fish in the Weaver, strict enforcement proceedings must be taken.

"I intend to continue monitoring this case until those responsible are prosecuted at the highest possible level."
