Dog rescued from locked car in Nantwich as owner faces investigation
By Ryan Parker 26th Jun 2026
A dog was rescued from a locked vehicle in Nantwich after police received a 999 call reporting the animal in distress during soaring temperatures.
The incident happened at around 10.40am on Friday in the Civic Hall Car Park, where members of the public alerted emergency services after spotting the dog inside the vehicle.
With assistance from Marks & Spencer staff, officers gained entry to the car and safely rescued the dog.
The animal was moved into the shade, given food and water, and cared for while officers located the owner.
Police confirmed the owner has been identified and will be dealt with under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "A parked car can become dangerously hot within minutes, even with windows left open.
"There is simply no excuse for leaving a dog inside a vehicle in these conditions.
"Thank you to everyone who stopped to help today. Your swift actions undoubtedly made a difference to this dog's welfare."
Police continue to remind dog owners never to leave pets unattended in vehicles during warm weather, as temperatures inside a car can rise rapidly and become fatal.
