St Mary's Church in Acton is stepping back in time to honour the historic Battle of Nantwich with a series of engaging events on Saturday 24 January, coinciding with the popular Holly Holy Day celebrations and the Sealed Knot's parade and battle re-enactment in Nantwich.

The Monks Lane church will host a morning of activities that combine history, hospitality, and heritage, providing visitors of all ages with an opportunity to connect with the rich past of the English Civil War.

On 25 January 1644, The Battle of Nantwich took place, during the English Civil War (1642–1646).

The Parliamentarians, led by Sir Thomas Fairfax, relieved the town of Nantwich, which had been under siege by Royalist forces.

This battle, fought near Acton, ended in a Parliamentarian victory, with many Royalist officers surrendering or being captured at Acton Church.

The victory was celebrated with the wearing of holly sprigs in hair and hats, a tradition that continues today as part of the Holly Holy Day festivities

Schedule of Events at St Mary's Acton:

  • 9:30am: Visitors are invited to warm up inside the church with hot drinks and buttered toast
  • 10am to 10.40am: Local historian Mike Lea will present a talk titled "The Civil War – A central role for Nantwich," offering an in-depth look at the Battle of Nantwich and its significance locally
  • 10.40am to 11am: Guests can engage in a lively Q&A session with members of the Sealed Knot's infantry and cavalry
  • 11am: A trip up the church tower
  • 11am: Join our guided walk to the original battlefields, where we will share stories and point out significant sites from the conflict.

Representative of St Mary's Acton, Stephan Davies, said: "We very much enjoy being part of the Holly Holy Day commemorations.

"The Battle of Nantwich is a pivotal chapter in our local history, and we're proud to share the story of Acton - and the role the church had to play.

"Whether you are a history enthusiast or just looking for a warm, welcoming place to spend the morning, we invite you to join us."

Visitors are encouraged to attend any or all of the events. While there is no fixed admission fee, donations are welcome to support the church's ongoing work and preservation.
