Cheshire East has given the go-ahead for an 80-bed care home on Maylands Park, described as the 'final piece of the jigsaw' in the Nantwich development.

Wednesday's (July 23) decision comes two months after permission was granted for 40 homes and a 49-apartment retirement living scheme as part of the phase two development of the site, off Peter De Stapleigh Way at Stapeley.

This latest application, from Muller Property Group, was for a three-storey care home together with public open space, access, layout and appearance.

Jon Suckley, agent for the applicant, told the strategic planning board: "This care development represents the final piece of the jigsaw for wider area, which was previously granted outline permission.

The care home decision comes two months after permission was granted for 40 homes and a 49-apartment retirement living scheme at Maylands Park (Google).

"Whilst the site is in the countryside and outside the Nantwich settlement boundary, the relevant development plan policies are out of date due to the council's housing land supply."

He said there is a significant need for care accommodation in the borough and 164 beds are required locally by 2030.

The care home, which will create 75 jobs, will be built on a site previously identified for a school.

Mr Suckley said: "The council's education team have confirmed that a new primary school is not required at this site."

Councillors took just 30 minutes to hear and decide the application.

Cllr Steve Edgar (Haslington, Conservative), said: "I can't see anything wrong with the scheme. I'd like to move to approve."

The Nantwich care home, which will create 75 jobs, will be built on a site previously identified for a school (CEC Planning).

Cllr Stewart Gardiner (Knutsford, Conservative), who seconded the approval, said: "I recognise the argument regarding the school that is not actually required in this locus, and I see that the provision of a care home will generate significant level of jobs.

"Unfortunately, they are lower paid jobs, but that is the nature of the care industry.

"But more significantly, I note in the report, that the matter has been seriously considered by the adults team, and that they are satisfied that the provision here has a specific need."

The application was unanimously approved.
