A Manchester Arena bombing survivor talked about his climb of Mount Kilimanjaro at a special Nantwich bookshop event, which took place earlier this month.

Martin Hibbert discussed his book 'Top of the World: Surviving the Manchester Bombing to Scale Kilimanjaro in a Wheelchair' at Nantwich Bookshop & Coffee Lounge, High Street, on Thursday 2 May.

Martin and his daughter, Eve, were left with life-changing injuries as a result of the Manchester Arena bomb on 22 May 2017. They were the closest people to the bomber to survive.

Nantwich Bookshop & Coffee Lounge, High Street, celebrated two decades in business last year (Jonathan White).

After two separate courses of radical NeuroPhysics Therapy in Australia, Martin, who had been left paralysed from the belly button down, regained movement in his legs and was able to stand in his callipers.

Martin is the vice chairman of the Spinal Injuries Association and is also involved in seeking justice for those affected by the Manchester Arena bombing.

Determined to make a difference Martin took on the ultimate challenge, scaling Kilimanjaro in a wheelchair, becoming the second paraplegic to do so, and raising a million pounds for charity.

Reaching the summit, on 13 June 2022, Martin, who was the closest person to the bomber to survive, said, 'I've often wondered why I was saved. Now I know why. It was for this moment.'

Denise Lawson, of Nantwich Bookshop & Coffee Lounge, said: "It was a very special author event with the phenomenal Martin Hibbert. An emotional yet uplifting and incredibly motivating night.
