Charles was due to visit the luxury car maker's site on Pyms Laneto learn more about its social and environmental sustainability strategies, as well as officially opening its new electric vehicle facility.

His Majesty was then set to visit St. Paul's Centre on Hightown, a charity providing food, furniture, shoes, bikes and community activities to those struggling financially.

At 5pm on Wednesday 22 May, the prime minister confirmed the 2024 general election would take place Thursday 4 July.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: "Following the prime minister's statement this afternoon calling a general election, the Royal Family will, in accordance with normal procedure, postpone engagements that may appear to divert attention or distract from the election campaign.

"Their Majesties send their sincere apologies to any of those who may be affected as a result. "

Charles, who has been undergoing treatment for cancer, was given permission by his doctors to return to public duties in April.

The King is expected to rearrange his trip to Crewe after the general election, with his trip being postponed rather than cancelled.

CEO of St Paul's Centre, Richard Holmes, told Nub News: "St. Paul's are of course disappointed our volunteers and staff have worked hard to prepare for this.

"We hope that eventually new arrangements can be made, in the meantime we continue to deliver and grow projects to serve our town and we remain committed to our mission."

Charles will still be attending ceremonies in France to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings this June.
