Nantwich Food Festival has all the ingredients for success, with its popular food history walking tours extended this year to include new venues.

The Food History Walking Tour takes place over festival weekend, September 4 to 6, with a programme of breakfast and lunchtime visits to well-known local eateries.

The programme includes visits to Nantwich's oldest pub, The Black Lion, Nantwich Bookshop and Coffee Lounge, The Cheese Shop and new this year: Edwards Deli & Wine, Dolce Vita Pasticceria and Bear and Boost.

The tours take in the town centre and food venues on Hospital Street, Pillory Street, Church Lane, Beam Street and Welsh Row.

Jackie Stringer, who helps organise the programme, said: "This has become a really popular part of the food festival weekend and we are delighted to welcome new venues onboard.

"The aim is to introduce visitors to Nantwich's rich food heritage and highlight what our fantastic selection of independent local eateries have to offer.

"Breakfast tours will start at the Museum at 9am for a short talk by a museum expert who will give a potted history of Nantwich's ancient links to the cheese and salt-making industries and its importance as a market town.

"We then set off at 9.30am to check out the town heritage and our local cafes and eating establishments.

"There's a visit to Edwards Deli & Wine, sister establishment to St Martha's, and a great destination all day with delicious plates for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We'll be checking out their smoothies and granola.

"We then move on to Nantwich Bookshop and Coffee Lounge for a savoury treat in their historic building. On Friday and Saturday we'll visit Dolce Vita Pasticceria run by Manuela who was previously a regular on Nantwich Market and recently set up a permanent patisserie on Church Lane.

"On Sunday our cake tasters and coffee will be at Bear and Boost who pride themselves on their independently sourced teas, coffees, cakes and snacks."

The tours also aim to drive footfall and support businesses along historic Welsh Row where history combines with a buzzing night-time economy.

They will take in the charming cottage names and learn about its historic landmark, The Black Lion, named last month in The Telegraph's guide to the country's Best Pubs and a regular in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.

Jackie added: "Lunch time tours are a real treat this year starting with a talk at the museum at 11am and leaving at 11.30 to head down Welsh Row, a gem of the Nantwich scene with its old cottages, eateries and shops.

"We are visiting the Black Lion, the oldest pub in Nantwich, and a beautiful black and white building, where visitors will be greeted by landlord and renowned chef Darren Snell.

"Darren has supported our walking tours for the last three years. He will serve up Weetwood ale and savoury snacks and offer a fascinating history of the pub.

"The walking tour will then visit The Cheese Shop where Nick the owner, who has worked with independent cheese producers for more than 20 years, will talk about local specialities along with a tasting.

"He will choose cheeses to complement an exciting new addition to the walking tours, a taster of Goldford sparkling and still wines. Goldford wines are a two-acre boutique vineyard on the slopes of Larkton Hill and run by the Smith family.

"All walking tour participants will also receive a 10 per cent discount for the Rolling Pin Bakery and Moss Café, both on Welsh Row."

The Food History Walking Tour numbers are limited to 12 each day so it is advised to book early HERE.
