They include a cockerel who arrived at the London Road centre in August after he was found trapped in a hedge at the Creamfields electronic dance music festival near Warrington.

Two cockerels have also been glad of refuge at the centre after they were rescued by a member of the public from a hard shoulder on the M62 motorway near St Helens last month.

Staff at the wildlife centre were already caring for another two cockerels who were found abandoned in an alleyway in Crewe in June.

Stapeley Grange Manager, Lee Stewart, said: "It has been a surprise to take delivery of so many cockerels in a short space of time.

"They are all fortunate they had animal lovers looking out for them, particularly our most recent arrivals, who were found straying on a busy motorway and one who was found alongside another cockerel trapped in a hedge at a noisy music festival.

"The member of the public who caught the cockerels on the motorway took them to a vets in St Helens. It doesn't appear they were abandoned as they were loose and there were no carriers or boxes at the location.

"They've had a lucky escape and we're delighted to have them, but we are keen to get them and the three other birds adopted sooner rather than later; we have since found a new home for one of the cockerels rescued at Creamfields.

"As a wildlife centre, we generally do not take in farm animals because we need to save space for wildlife casualties. However, we made an exception in each of these cases.

"They would all make fantastic pets and companions to anyone with experience of backyard chicken keeping who may have taken strays in the past or perhaps have given commercial chickens a new life by adopting them from charities such as the British Hen Welfare Trust."

Anyone who is interested in offering any of these birds loving forever homes should contact Stapeley Grange on 0300 123 0722 or email [email protected].
