Nantwich families call on MP to stop Rosebank oil drilling in North Sea

Nantwich families have come together in Brookfield Park to send a clear message to their MP on the proposed drilling at Rosebank oil field, as the UK experiences an increasingly extreme summer.

Over 2,700 people are estimated to have died from heat-related causes during the May and June heatwaves in England and Wales.

Researchers from Imperial College London, the Met Office and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine estimate around 42 per cent of those deaths were attributable to the additional heat caused by human-induced climate change.

Parents For Future Cheshire and Sustainable Nantwich are campaigning for investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency to reduce dependence on volatile fossil fuel markets, which have contributed to the cost-of-living crisis, to cut emissions and build a more resilient energy system for future generations.

Protesters say the vast majority of oil from Rosebank, located in the North Sea, would be sold on the global market generating profits for Equinor so would not help to reduce our bills or contribute to energy security.

Connor Naismith MP has also been invited to attend a special screening of The National Emergency Briefing, organised by Sustainable Nantwich, at Nantwich Civic Hall on 5 October (Photo: Nub News).

Located 150 miles east of Aberdeen, the Rosebank oil field was approved under the previous Conservative government and construction is well under way.

Rosebank is estimated to contain the equivalent of up to 300 million barrels of oil and at its peak will produce approximately 69,000 barrels a day.

Nantwich mum, local nurse and co-ordinator of Parents for Future Cheshire, Chloe Rowe, told Nub News: "As a parent, I find the increasingly extreme weather really frightening.

"We're already seeing drought affecting farmers, crops and food prices, and our children are growing up in a climate that is becoming more dangerous.

"After watching The People's Emergency Briefing and hearing what scientists predict for our children's adulthood and the families they may one day raise, I felt genuinely scared for their future.

"We know what is happening, so we must act now. More oil and gas is not the answer; we need to invest in clean, secure renewable energy for our children."

Connor Naismith MP has also been invited to attend a special screening of The National Emergency Briefing, organised by Sustainable Nantwich, at Nantwich Civic Hall on Monday 5 October at 7.30pm.

Responding to the protesters, Mr Naismith told Nub News: "The Prime Minister has been clear no new oil and gas licences will be issued under this government.

"Labour are committed to renewable energy, with £8.3 billion allocated to the publicly-owned Great British Energy across this Parliament. That's investment in green jobs and clean growth through wind, solar and nuclear energy."

Everyone is welcome to attend, to learn more about the scientific evidence behind the climate emergency and discuss what it means for our children and for the UK's future.
