British Transport Police are investigating after a man was found seriously injured on a late-night train from Nantwich to Crewe.

At around 12.16am on Saturday 21 June, a train guard on a Shrewsbury to Crewe service came across a man who had boarded the train at Nantwich with head and facial injuries.

The 69-year-old man was escorted off the train at Crewe and was taken to Leighton Hospital.

He was found to have suffered a fractured skull and eye socket, a broken nose and facial injuries, and bruising to his chest and back.

While detectives are working to establish exactly how and where the man sustained his injuries, it is suspected he may have been assaulted.

Officers have completed a number of enquiries, including obtaining CCTV that shows the injured man on the platform just before he boarded the train at Nantwich, where he had been for an evening out.

Police believe a number of people boarded at the same time and briefly spoke to the man.

They are asking those people, or anyone who saw the injured man at Nantwich Railway Station at around midnight, or beforehand, to make contact.

While British Transport Police detectives are working to establish exactly how and where the man sustained his injuries, it is suspected he may have been assaulted (BTP).
