Urgent repairs to the historic roof cone structure in Nantwich have been successfully completed, restoring an important architectural feature to one of the town's most distinctive buildings.

Legat Owen's building surveying team were instructed following concerns the flagpole at 1-5 Pillory Street had begun to lean.

The Grade II-listed building, designed in 1911 by local architect Ernest H. Edleston, sits prominently on the corner of Pillory Street and Hospital Street.

A detailed investigation was carried out, revealing the top cone structure beneath the lead covering had significantly deteriorated.

During the works, Legat Owen obtained two specialist scaffold proposals incorporating a cantilever design to safely access the leaning flagpole.

The team then removed the lead covering, discovering the top cone structure beneath it had rotted.

They liaised closely with the conservation officer and secured consent to carry out the necessary repairs.

Timber and leadwork specialists were appointed to rebuild and re‑wrap the cone structure in line with heritage requirements.

Once the restoration was completed, the fully repaired flagpole was refitted to its original position.

The building's flamboyant façade and distinctive porthole-style windows make it one of Nantwich's most recognisable landmarks.

Hibberts Solicitors occupy the upper floors of the building, while Pockets Menswear and Clive Christian Interiors trade from the ground floor.

Associate Director at Legat Owen, Sam Davis, told Nub News: "This building is an important part of Nantwich's architectural character, so it was vital the repair was handled carefully and respectfully.

"Our team worked closely with conservation specialists to ensure the flagpole could be reinstated safely while preserving the historic fabric of the structure.

"We're delighted to see the flag flying proudly once again."
