Plans to develop three new apartments above a "tired" former Nantwich town centre shop have been approved, as well as plans to redevelop the ground floor.

Applicant, Mr Martin Young, submitted two sets of plans for 16-18 Welsh Row, located at the old Bamfords Top Flight wild bird seed store.

Mr Young applied for a change of use from commercial to residential on the first and second floor of the building, allowing for three apartments.

Mr Young also applied to redevelop the disrepaired shop front, replacing windows (on all floors), along with timber boardings for shop signage and low-level brick plinth at ground floor.

A Cheshire East planning officer labelled the plans 'acceptable' (Photo: CEC Planning).

For the apartments, a Cheshire East planning officer said: "The proposed development complies with the requirements of Class MA, Schedule 2, Part 3 of the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 2015 (as amended), subject to conditions.

"As such, prior approval of the Local Planning Authority is not required."

For the ground floor, the planning officer said: "Given the scheme does not include any major structural works to the external footprint, with proposed alterations to the frontage of the property only, the scale of development is acceptable.

"The proposed development would not distract or cause harm to the street scene and will have a positive impact upon the character of the buildings as a NDHA (Non-Designated Heritage Asset), conservation area and adjacent listed buildings.

"Overall, the proposed development is acceptable in heritage and design terms."
